Where are we going?” Patterson asked as they drove away from Jeremy Knight’s apartment building toward the western shore of Lake Montauk. “And how come you know about Candlewood Investments?”

“Bruce Russo.” Grant kept his eyes on the road but spoke through gritted teeth. “He’s been on the FBI’s radar for a couple of decades because of his financial dealings and the fact that he’s a suspected mobster. I worked on a task force targeting him back when I was a junior agent. But we could make nothing stick.”

“He’s the man behind Candlewood Investments, I assume,” Patterson said.

“It’s one of many companies he owns. He operates it mostly as a shell corporation to funnel funds from his illicit activities to legitimize the profits.”

“You’re talking about money laundering.”

“And the theater company is a great place to do that.”

“Still, thirty-five grand is a lot of cash to give Jeremy Knight for a show with barely any ticket sales. I find it hard to believe he’d get enough of his investment back to make it worthwhile.”

“I agree. Which is why I want to have a chat with him.”

“Now all we have to do is find him.”

“It won’t be that hard. I’ve kept my hand in with the task force since moving on and up in the Bureau. Russo fancies himself as a land developer. Another good way to launder money. He’s building a high-end hotel and yacht club out on Westlake Drive near Star Island. He bought the land years ago and just got around to developing it. Word is, it’s his new pet project. If he’s anywhere, he’ll be there.”

“And if he’s not?”

“Then I’ll call up my buddy on the task force. He’ll know where Russo is.”

“How long has this task force been running?”

“Almost twelve years. Truth is, it’s really more of a one-man operation at this point. CID decided there were bigger fish to fry. Russo wasn’t high enough up the food chain to warrant the resources, apparently. Still, they can’t quite let go, so they kept an agent on him.”

Patterson nodded. CID was the Criminal Investigative Division of the FBI, tasked with investigating mail fraud and racketeering, among other things. “You think he’s involved in Jeremy Knight’s death?”

“I don’t know what to think,” Grant admitted. “Linda Knight’s brother, Stephen Canning, has a record of violence and a motive. He also doesn’t have a solid alibi for the night of the murder.”

“But as Canning pointed out, he wasn’t aware he would need one. If he was intending to commit murder, surely he would have prepared a little better.”

“Not if it was a crime of passion. Maybe he lost his temper. Still, the connection to Bruce Russo is intriguing.” Grant slowed the car. They were approaching a construction site surrounded by chain-link fencing on the right-hand side. An imposing multi story building was being erected near the water. Beyond this was a marina with empty boat slips. But it was the structure under construction standing apart from the main building that caught Patterson’s eye.
